I CONDEMN THE BARBARIC ACTION OF THE POLICEMAN AGAINST THE POOR NURSING MOTHER – Sarah Adwoa Safo.
My attention has been drawn to a video which has since gone viral on the various social media platforms, in which a nursing mother was seen being mercilessly and brutally pummelled by a policeman for insisting that the bank allow her to withdraw her own money from her account at the premises of Midland Savings and Loans.
The Women’s Caucus of Parliament condemns unequivocally and in no uncertain terms the barbaric act of this police man and urge the Inspector General of Police to take every step to ensure that this police man is dealt with punitively according to the law.
As a mother, I wept uncontrollably watching this poor nursing mother being subjected to such severe physical abuse by the police man. The unbearable part was the fact that, she had in her hands, a newly born baby.
What was even more distasteful was the fact that onlookers, including officials of Midland Savings and loans watched proceedings closely without any intervention to save the woman from the torrential blows of this police Corp.
In this age where Women Empowerment Advocacy has been very pervasive, it is most despicable to see such barbaric and vicious act being meted out to such a poor and unsuspecting woman by a police man whose core mandate and responsibility is to protect the poor and the vulnerable. This condemnable act is a clear violation of the fundamental human rights of this poor woman.
I am reliably informed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has as a matter of urgency caused the arrest of the said police man. I commend him for the swift action and, I further strongly recommend that the officials of the bank spotted in the video, should be arrested to face the full rigours of the law.
I also want to make a request to the management of Midland Savings and Loans to ensure that an appropriate compensation package is prepared for the victim.
Lastly, I want to thank all Ghanaians for the massive outpour of condemnation against the uncouth action of this police man and for calling for justice for this poor woman.
Signed
Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo(MP)
Chairperson, Women’s Caucus -
Parliament of Ghana.
