The Road Works Being Done At Taifa And The Gutter Works Being Executed

ON TAIFA ROADS
Lots of people have asked me why I haven't showed pictures of the road works being done at Taifa and the gutter works being executed on the Atomic Roundabout-Taifa Burkina- Bankyease-Mr. Adjei Roads, after complaining on Facebook so many times about the bad nature of these roads. Well, it is always the best to "hasten slowly" on such matters and see to the actual completion of some before through around some applause.

Resurfacing of the Main Taifa Township roads went on very well and beautifully. In fact, the contractor worked during the day and also at night.
We thank our Honourable Member of Parliament, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo for lobbying for the manifestation and realization of our "RIGHT TO GOOD ROADS"!

We are however waiting patiently for the Atomic Roundabout-Bankyease-Taifa Burkina-Mr. Adjei Roads to be completed as scheduled.
May the Lord bless and see us through all these.

Ghana to locally produce first electric car by end of 2018

Speaking to Citi Business News after Tropical Cable and Conductor Limited acquired one of the vehicles of Kantanka Automobile, the General Manager of Kantanka, Francis Kudjordjie was optimistic the electric vehicle will reduce the use of fuel in Ghana when outdoored.

Ghana could see its first electric car, locally produced in the country as automobile company, Kantanka Automobile prepares to test its electric power-driven car by end of 2018.

According to company, the move is aimed at leapfrogging its operations in the industry, to be competitive and profitable.

“About three years ago, we came out with the first prototype of electric cars. The following year, we developed on it. We have three different modules of electric cars which has undergone test and have passed,” he announced.

He stated that the company is now outlining plans to market the cars since it is new to the Ghanaian market.

Kantanka

“We are now moving up to the commercialization of the electric cars which by the end of the year or early next year, we will be rolling out and we are very sure and hopeful that with the introduction of the electric cars, it will be a mover for the nation”.

Touching on how it will reduce fuel consumption, Mr. Kudjordjie such cars will only require charging to move.

“We have already being complaining about fuel increases. With the electric cars coming in, we believe that it will cut down demand for fuel and move the nation forward”.

He argued that such a policy will boost the manufacturing subsector of the economy to grow.

“I think that this is where our industrial policy comes in. We should have policies with definite targets, definite numbers, specifics saying that if you have a company in Ghana, you should purchase your vehicles from the Ghanaian manufacturer, that is the only way we can grow the manufacturing subsector in Ghana” he said.

Battering Of A customer By A Police Officer At The Midland Savings And Loans Bank At Shiashie

STATEMENT MADE ON THE FLOOR OF PARLIAMENT ON JULY 23, 2018 ON THE BATTERING OF A CUSTOMER BY A POLICE OFFICER AT THE MIDLAND SAVINGS AND LOANS BANK AT SHIASHIE BY HON. SARAH ADWOA SAFO, DEPUTY MAJORITY LEADER AND CHAIRPERSON OF THE WOMEN CAUCUS OF PARLIAMENT.

Mr. Speaker, citizens of this country on Friday, 20th July, 2018 witnessed a very horrific scenes in a video circulating in the social media that many of us are yet to come to terms with.

Mr. Speaker, in the video, a Police Officer armed with an assault rifle was seen violently battering a woman and her baby multiple times on the head, first with an umbrella, and then with his fist. The Officer continuously slapped and punched her and attempted to drag the woman violently out of the building, paying little attention to the woman cries for help and that of a baby the woman was carrying.

Mr. Speaker, a close observation of the video revealed that not much was done by the Officials at the incident scene, except that a man who appears to be an employee asking the woman to give him the baby. The man was also heard promising to give the woman GHȼ250, which was reported later to be the amount she had wanted to withdraw from the bank.

Mr. Speaker, according to media reports, the incidence took place at the Shiashie branch of Midland Savings and Loans Company in Accra where the woman, identified as Madam Patience Osafo, had gone to withdraw her money she had deposited with the Bank. The Police Officer, who was identified as Lance Corporal Frederick Amanor, was the Police Officer on guard duties at the bank.

Mr. Speaker, this very unfortunate incident as captured in the video was unacceptable and defies logic as there was disproportionate show of power. Though, the video did not reveal what might have occasioned the incidence, it is difficult for anybody to fathom what might have occasioned such a brutality from the Police Officer.

To quote our President, His Excellency Nana Akuffo Addo, “policemen are meant to protect citizens, not to assault citizens.” The Police Service as citizens’ refuge cannot become unsafe haven for the citizens. Not now and ever! The actions of the Police Officer is irreconcilable with our democratic values, respect for human rights and human dignity and our resolve as country to ensure that the rule of law reign supreme in potential conflict situation no matter the provocation.

In many of our discourses on development, Microfinance or Savings and Loans Companies have become a symbol of compassion and women economic empowerment in many developing countries including Ghana. It is very unfortunate that this incidence attempts to depict that symbol in a manner that is not of compassion, and which disregard the plight of our women or the vulnerable in society and the dignity of womanhood.

The Women Caucus join H.E the President, the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection and the general public to condemn the actions of the Police Officer involved. We wish to also register our disappointment in the staff and bystanders at the Branch of the Midland Savings and Loans Company at Shiashie whose actions and inactions propelled the assault.

The Caucus calls for justice for the woman. The Caucus joins President Nana Akufo-Addo and other well-meaning Ghanaians to support fully any sanction the Police administration will take against the Police Officer to serve as a deterrent to other recalcitrant officers who assault citizens instead of protecting them.

Above all, I call for the investigations to be transparent and the public updated through this august House. We also call on the Hon. Minister for Gender Children and Social Protection to also take steps to ensure that the requisite medical needs of the woman are met to enable her recover.

Mr. Speaker, the person or the Whistleblower who circulated the video requires the protection of the State. This august House has passed the Whistleblower Act of 2007 (Act 702) and the recently passed Witness Protection Act of 2018 to assist whistleblowers in matters such as this.

I urge the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Ghana Police Service and other investigative body to ensure that these laws guide them in their investigations so that the Whistleblower does not suffer any victimisation or attack from any unscrupulous or disgruntled persons or groups.

To conclude, Mr. Speaker, with your indulgence, I wish on behalf of the Women Caucus to extend our sympathies to Madam Patience Osafo and her families and to assure them that the Caucus will support her to get justice. We also wish her speedy recovery from whatever injury she might have sustained from the incident

I thank you Mr. Speaker for the attention and the opportunity once again.

I CONDEMN THE BARBARIC ACTION OF THE POLICEMAN AGAINST THE POOR NURSING MOTHER – Sarah Adwoa Safo.

My attention has been drawn to a video which has since gone viral on the various social media platforms, in which a nursing mother was seen being mercilessly and brutally pummelled by a policeman for insisting that the bank allow her to withdraw her own money from her account at the premises of Midland Savings and Loans.

The Women’s Caucus of Parliament condemns unequivocally and in no uncertain terms the barbaric act of this police man and urge the Inspector General of Police to take every step to ensure that this police man is dealt with punitively according to the law.

As a mother, I wept uncontrollably watching this poor nursing mother being subjected to such severe physical abuse by the police man. The unbearable part was the fact that, she had in her hands, a newly born baby.

What was even more distasteful was the fact that onlookers, including officials of Midland Savings and loans watched proceedings closely without any intervention to save the woman from the torrential blows of this police Corp.

In this age where Women Empowerment Advocacy has been very pervasive, it is most despicable to see such barbaric and vicious act being meted out to such a poor and unsuspecting woman by a police man whose core mandate and responsibility is to protect the poor and the vulnerable. This condemnable act is a clear violation of the fundamental human rights of this poor woman.

I am reliably informed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has as a matter of urgency caused the arrest of the said police man. I commend him for the swift action and, I further strongly recommend that the officials of the bank spotted in the video, should be arrested to face the full rigours of the law.

I also want to make a request to the management of Midland Savings and Loans to ensure that an appropriate compensation package is prepared for the victim.

Lastly, I want to thank all Ghanaians for the massive outpour of condemnation against the uncouth action of this police man and for calling for justice for this poor woman.

Signed

Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo(MP)
Chairperson, Women’s Caucus -
Parliament of Ghana.

Kantanka To Lead An Industrial Automobile Revolution

Some purported technological moralists insist that Kantanka should have started more humbly with the manufacture of simple machines like motorbikes, tricycles or simple farm machines – tractors and combine harvesters – the blueprints of which undoubtedly the Kantanka Company would have built upon and owned. This approach, they claim, would have been more feasible since the capital and technology involved isn’t the hurdle that a sustainable and profitable car manufacturing plant ought to muster.

Arguments like this are particularly unconstructive.

Dilettantism—or propaganda masquerading as critique—as a leading principle in the advancement of technologies and economic policies of pragmatic importance to people will mark the end of valuable debate. Nothing will be further from a thoroughly serious analysis than such an attitude.

Almost all debates owe something to dilettantes, often very valuable viewpoints. For that reason, all dilettantism, local or foreign, is not necessarily bad – not all forms of it are tolerable either. To this point, what interests do non-African critics have in the politics of Kantanka or Ghanaian government affairs

The irony, of course, stands that the recent criticism against a Ghanaian auto manufacturer, Kantanka, on the grounds of originalism stems from a society and political ecology that is comfortable with skirting its own originalism for economic value; native production, design, and manufacturing in America are vanishing as most of American manufacturing is found in China. Rather than call Kantanka a foe, if anything, these faultfinders should fall in love with Kantanka – if they believe Kwadwo Sarfo is doing what America does best.

In any case, every time consumers are confronted with a counter narrative such as that of a Not-Made-In-Ghana product, they are more likely to opt against cars assembled in Ghana in favor of those assembled abroad, even if the former were to launch their own country into an industrial age.

Already Ghana imports some 50,000 vehicles yearly, which come at a dire expense to the everyday Ghanaian. Frankly, the details of where Kantanka cars are designed, built, and assembled are of little relevance to the average consumer who can now afford a vehicle for work.

It is comforting that the Ghanaian business class, much like the average consumer, is excited about this new company and has hailed Kantanka’s commercial exploits as an exemplary and important component in the quest to establish an industrial base in Ghana. At the very least, they see Kantanka as a first step in reengineering most of the technologies in current use in the country. Kantanka provides a much-needed template to ignite an industrial revolution from out of Ghana, out of West Africa and, perhaps, out of Africa.

If we should invest in Kantanka, we must be clear that the technology is here in Ghana to stay, that it is not a fleeting trifle and that it also adds value through local contribution.
